The Developing Nations Project was launched a couple months ago. Being a photographer, I already had most of the gear I needed to get the project off the ground.
I purchased a compact Canon Selphy CP-800 photo printer, so that I would not have to rely on being able to find a photo development shop while carrying out the project. Especially considering that a big aspect of the project is developing photos for people in remote areas that might not have access to development facilities.
There were other inevitable expenses associated with the project as well, such as; photo paper, ink and transportation (as getting to some of the remote villages means renting a motorcycle or hiring a moto-taxi).
In addition, DSLR cameras (a.k.a. big paparazzi looking cameras) have more moving parts and elements than typical digital cameras. This means that from time to time depending on how often they are used, you need to have them serviced or repaired regardless of how well you look after them.
I have been traveling Asia for quite a while now on a budget. As this is a personal project, I planned to put my own hard earned money towards it. After all photography for me is a labor of love and giving back was the main reason I started this project in the first place. However I decided to start a Rocket Hub account two months ago.
RocketHub is a launchpad and community for independent artists and entrepreneurs.
We offer an innovative way to raise money and tangible opportunities to take creative products and endeavors to next level. RocketHub is a destination for emerging artists and entrepreneurs, and those who wish to discover and support innovative work.
This was in order to try and raise some funds and take a little bit of the financial burden off my back as well as provide people with a means to contribute if they aren’t up for going out and doing some photographing and printing themselves.
With a two month period on Rocket Hub, the project was funded by 10 contributors for a total of an astounding $343. In addition to personal thank yous, which I have sent out via email to the supporters, I just wanted to take a few minutes to write a blog and express my gratitude once again.
I am truly grateful for all the support thus far and hope to continue on with this project well into the future.
If you missed out on are Rocket Hub campaign, you can now donate via PayPal. All donations of $15 or more will receive hard copy prints via mail. If you would like to do so please donate using the following button.
A huge thanks again to all the supporters for your generosity and support!
